The basics

What a dental implant actually is

An implant is a small titanium post placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Over the following months the bone grows onto the surface of the post and holds it firmly in place. That process is called osseointegration, and it is the reason implants behave differently from anything that simply rests on the gum.

Once the implant is stable, a crown, bridge or fixed denture is attached to it. Because the implant sits in the bone rather than on it, it does not move when you eat or speak, and it does not depend on the teeth either side for support.

That last point matters more than most people realise. A conventional bridge means cutting down two healthy teeth to carry it. An implant leaves them alone.

What implants can replace

  • A single missing or failing tooth
  • Several missing teeth in a row
  • A loose lower denture that will not stay put
  • A full upper or lower jaw
  • Teeth lost to gum disease, decay or injury

They are not the only answer, and they are not always the best one. Part of the job at your consultation is telling you when a bridge or a denture would serve you better.

Treatment options

Which implant treatment is right for you

What you need depends on how many teeth are missing, the condition of the teeth around them and how much bone is available. Your free consultation starts that conversation. If 3D imaging is clinically required to confirm bone levels and plan treatment safely, a CBCT scan is charged separately.

Single tooth implant

One implant and one crown, replacing a single missing or failing tooth. The neighbouring teeth are left untouched, which is the main advantage over a conventional bridge.

Multiple teeth

Two or more implants carrying a fixed bridge, replacing a run of missing teeth without needing a separate implant for every gap.

Implant retained dentures

An existing or new denture clipped onto implants so it stays put. Often the most cost effective route for anyone struggling with a loose lower denture.

Full arch, fixed teeth

A complete upper or lower jaw of fixed teeth carried on a small number of implants. In suitable cases a fixed temporary set can be placed on the day of surgery.

Bone grafting

Where a tooth has been missing a long time the bone shrinks. Grafting rebuilds enough volume to place an implant safely. Your scan shows whether you need it before you commit to anything.

Sinus lift

In the upper back jaw the sinus can sit too low for a standard implant. A sinus lift creates the height required. It is a routine part of implant treatment, not a complication.

What happens

Your treatment, step by step

Timelines vary more than most people expect. In suitable cases a fixed temporary set of teeth can be placed on the day of surgery, so you leave with teeth the same afternoon. The final restoration follows once the bone has integrated with the implant. Your clinician gives you a timeline for your own case at the planning stage.

Step 1

Free implant consultation

Tell us what you would like to change and talk through the implant options that may suit you. We will explain the likely next steps clearly, with no obligation to proceed.

Step 2

Clinical assessment, imaging and your plan

If you would like to explore treatment further, we complete the diagnostics needed to plan your case safely. A CBCT scan may be recommended to assess your bone; it is not included in the free consultation and costs £350. Once the necessary information is complete, you receive a written treatment plan, timeline and fixed quote. Nothing goes ahead until you have had time to think about it.

Step 3

Implant placement

Surgery is carried out under local anaesthetic. Most people return to normal activity the following day. Sedation is available if you would prefer it.

Step 4

Healing and integration

The bone integrates with the implant over the following months. You are not left without teeth during this period. A temporary tooth or denture is provided where needed.

Step 5

Final restoration fitted

Once the implant is stable your crown, bridge or fixed denture is made and fitted, then adjusted until the bite and the appearance are right.

Step 6

Reviews and maintenance

Implants need looking after like natural teeth. We review yours regularly and your hygienist will show you how to clean around them properly, which is the single biggest factor in how long they last.

Suitability

Implants are not right for everyone

Most adults with healthy gums and enough bone are suitable, and where bone is lacking it can usually be rebuilt. Your free consultation gives you an initial view of the options. When detailed 3D imaging is needed to confirm suitability, the CBCT scan is charged separately.

There are situations where we will advise against implants, or ask you to deal with something else first. Being told honestly at the consultation is better than finding out halfway through.

We will talk your options through carefully if you

  • Smoke, which raises the risk of implant failure
  • Have gum disease that needs treating first
  • Have uncontrolled diabetes or another condition affecting healing
  • Take certain bone medications, including bisphosphonates
  • Have had radiotherapy to the jaw
  • Grind your teeth heavily

None of these rules implants out automatically. They change how we plan your case, and occasionally they mean we recommend a different treatment instead.

Your free consultation

A useful first step, with no obligation

  • Time with the clinician who would carry out your treatment
  • A conversation about your concerns, goals and dental history
  • Honest guidance on the implant options that may suit you
  • A clear explanation of the next diagnostic and treatment steps
  • An overview of likely costs and the finance options available
  • Time to ask questions, with no obligation to go ahead

Clear about scan fees

CBCT/3D imaging is not included in the free consultation. If a CBCT scan is clinically required, the fee is £350. We will explain why it is needed and confirm the fee with you before carrying it out.

If you decide to proceed, 0% APR finance is available over 6, 10 or 12 months, subject to age and status, and a minimum spend applies. Your treatment coordinator will show you the exact monthly figure before you commit to anything.

Thinking about going abroad?

Implant treatment overseas is often cheaper up front. What the price usually does not include is aftercare, or anyone to see if something goes wrong once you are home. Correcting failed overseas implant work is frequently more expensive than the original treatment would have cost here.

Start with a free consultation here so you understand the likely options, next steps and costs before you book a flight. If further diagnostics are needed, any fees will be explained in advance.

Who carries out the treatment

Implants placed and restored by the same clinician

Dr Tony Taunk, principal dentist and owner of Dental Perfection

Dr Tony Taunk

Principal Dentist and Practice Owner

Tony owns Dental Perfection and has worked in implant dentistry since 2002, placing implants himself since 2014. He has completed more than 2,000 implant cases. He holds three postgraduate diplomas in the field: implantology at London and at Manchester, and advanced implantology at London.

He plans, places and restores implants himself, so the work is not handed to a different clinician partway through. All implant surgery is carried out at our Derby practice, with consultations available at both sites.

He is the official dentist to Derby County and Burton Albion, and was named Best Young Dentist in 2013.

Common questions

Dental implant questions, answered

How much do dental implants cost?

The cost depends on how many implants you need, the type of restoration fitted on top and whether any bone grafting is required. We can discuss the likely options and costs at your free consultation. A CBCT scan is not included; if one is clinically required, it costs £350. Once the necessary diagnostics are complete, your written plan sets out the treatment and fixed total price. 0% APR finance is available, subject to age and status, and a minimum spend applies.

Are dental implants available on the NHS?

NHS funding for implants is very restricted and is generally limited to cases with a specific clinical need, such as tooth loss following an accident or cancer treatment. For most people implants are a private treatment. We provide implant treatment privately at both of our practices, with finance available to spread the cost.

Does having a dental implant hurt?

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain while the implant is placed. Afterwards it is normal to have some soreness and swelling for a few days, which most people manage with ordinary over the counter pain relief. If you are anxious, sedation is available. We give you aftercare instructions and a number to call if anything concerns you.

How long does implant treatment take from start to finish?

It depends on the case. In suitable cases a fixed temporary set of teeth can be placed on the day of surgery, so you do not leave without teeth. The final restoration comes later, once the bone has integrated with the implant, and that stage takes several months and cannot be rushed. If bone grafting is needed, add further healing time on top. Recovery differs from person to person, so your clinician gives you a timeline for your own case at the planning stage rather than a standard figure.

How long do dental implants last?

Implants are designed as a long term replacement and many last for decades, but no dentist can guarantee a lifespan. How long yours last depends largely on how well you clean around them, whether you smoke, and whether you attend regular reviews and hygiene appointments. The crown or bridge attached to the implant may need replacing at some point even when the implant itself remains sound.

Am I suitable for dental implants?

Most adults with healthy gums and sufficient jawbone are suitable. Smoking, untreated gum disease, uncontrolled diabetes and certain bone medications all affect the decision, though none of them rules implants out automatically. Your free consultation gives you an initial view of the options. A clinical assessment and 3D imaging may then be needed to confirm suitability; a CBCT scan is not included in the free consultation and costs £350 if clinically required.

What if I have been told I do not have enough bone?

Bone loss is common where teeth have been missing for a while, and it is usually solvable. Bone grafting rebuilds the volume needed, and in the upper back jaw a sinus lift creates additional height. Both are routine parts of implant treatment. Your CBCT scan shows exactly how much bone you have and whether either is needed, before you commit to anything.

What happens if an implant fails?

Implant failure is uncommon but it does happen, most often where an implant does not integrate with the bone early on, or where gum infection develops around it later. If it happens we will assess why, treat the site, and in many cases a replacement implant can be placed once the area has healed. We explain the risks that apply to your case, and any warranty terms, before you agree to treatment.

Are implants better than a denture or a bridge?

They suit different situations. Implants stay fixed and do not rely on the neighbouring teeth, and because they sit in the bone they help maintain bone volume. A conventional bridge involves preparing the healthy teeth either side. A denture is removable and less costly but can move when eating. Implants cost more up front and take longer. Your clinician will set out all the options that apply to you rather than pushing one.

Should I consider having implants abroad?

Treatment overseas can look considerably cheaper, but the price usually excludes aftercare, and there is no straightforward route back to your clinician if a problem develops months later. Correcting failed implant work is often more expensive than having the treatment done here in the first place. We would suggest starting with a free consultation here so you understand the likely options, next steps and costs before deciding.
